In recent years, Hong Kong has made concerted efforts to attract top talent from the Mainland to come and work in Hong Kong. The government enacted the ASMTP to provide a streamlined pathway for mainland residents who possess unique skills or valuable experiences to come and work in Hong Kong.

Generally, the government grants successful applicants under this scheme an initial 36-month stay. Applicants may apply for an extension of stay within four weeks before expiry. The extension normally follows a 3-2 years pattern or aligns with the employee’s contract.
